25 Lessons I’ve Learnt in 25 years

25 Lessons I’ve Learnt in 25 years

I recently turned 26 and as I was reflecting over the last 25 years it dawned on me that a quarter a century is what it takes to learn a thing or two-or 25. So here are 25 lessons that I have learnt over the years.

  1. Keep God first in your life and spend time in His presence

I have felt alone and I found solace in knowing that God was with me. I don’t know if mastered is the right word to use but I have never mastered the conventional way of praying. If I am being honest I hardly pray in the morning or at night, sleep always gets the best of me. My way is having conversations with God throughout the day which is fine but I asked myself what Jesus did and he always spent alone in prayer and I would like to practice that going forward. We get to talk to God through prayer and He gets to talk to us through meditation and that’s why we need to set aside alone time.

  1.   Be a doer

The best remedy for regret is taking action when it comes to the things that you want to achieve. So don’t hold back on your dreams and ideas as time is fleeting. Nike has had it right all along “Just do it”.

  1.   Self-care is important

We spend so much time setting goals and ticking things off our to do lists that we forget to take care of ourselves. Self-care is not a one time thing but habits that we do repeatedly to take care of mind, body and soul. e.g. exercise, sleep

  1.   Learn to say yes

Fear holds us back so many times that we back out of things that we would make us happy. When hit with a situation where you are scared of doing something just feel the fear and say yes to it. Memories are made of the things that we say yes to.

  1.   Learn to say no

Always speak your mind and say no to the things that make you uncomfortable. Remember NO is a complete sentence and you don’t have to always give an explanation for it.

  1.   Always do your best

Whatever you do give it your best both at work and while having fun. The work that you put out is a reflection of who you are as a person.

  1.   Don’t make assumptions

When in doubt don’t make assumptions gather up the courage and ask to find out the truth. In my opinion assumptions can toy with your mind and to avoid that “SPEAK UP”.

  1.   Be impeccable with your word

Always keep your word and don’t make promises that you don’t intend to keep. As tempting as it is don’t gossip and mind your own business.

  1.   Don’t take anything personally

Whatever people think about you is just an extension of themselves. So don’t take any negativity to heart, stay true to you and be confident in yourself.

  1.  Time is an illusion

Bring yourself into the moment fully so as to access the future you want. Plan for the future and learn from your past but enjoy every moment. Getting stuck in the past leads to depression while dwelling too much on the future leads anxiety. Live presently with the future in mind.

  1.  Patience is truly a virtue

All good things come to those who wait. Give up the need for instant gratification and trust the process. My hair has been the biggest lesson when it comes to patience. Deciding to go do with dreadlocks was so hard especially during the first year since the growth was so slow and it kept getting chopped off which was so infuriating. But looking back it had to through all that to get where it is now.

  1.  Take risks

Get out of your comfort zone and fearlessly go after what sets your soul on fire. I would like to be authentic as possible when it comes to what I put out so if I am being honest this is the one area that I am yet to fully embrace. I have seen how rewarding it is through my friend and I was hoping I would start my year off with the biggest risk that I have taken so far. I know you shouldn’t put too much thought into it but I am yet to find the balance between planning and going for it.

  1.  Don’t forget to dream

Dream big and whenever you feel like giving up know that your dreams are not big enough.

  1.  You need to put in the work

You need to put in the work in order to achieve what you have set out to do. This is one of Gary Vee’s biggest talk points. That article is not going to write itself neither is that business going to start itself. You cannot wish things into existence so have to grind and get your hands dirty.

  1.  Purpose is about the journey and not about the destination

Don’t stress over finding your purpose concentrate on the repeated steps that you make daily. Purpose is not an isolated thing where once you find out what it is you will get satisfied. Your purpose could be as simple as being kind to that one person.

  1.  Be kind

It costs nothing to be kind to someone and it doesn’t have to be a grand gesture. It can be something as small as sharing your meal. It is often said that to whom much is given much is required so if you feel like you have been blessed be a blessing to someone else.

  1.  Take time to date yourself

It was not until last year that I reached a point where I had a sense of who I am. If you asked me earlier on somethings that you would consider basic would take me a while to answer. It’s important to always set time aside to try out new things so as to find your likes and dislikes. Do all the things that you would do if you were dating someone. As times goes by we evolve so it has to be a continuous thing.

  1.  We only get one shot at life

There is no replay button to life; this is all we have so make use your time wisely. Do the things that bring you joy and disregard other people’s opinions.

  1.  We are called to be co-creators

We were called to be co-creators with God after all we were created in his image. So make that music, write that book and start that business. Make it your mission to use your gift to create something. Like Marie Forleo says “The World Needs That Special Gift That Only You Have”

  1.  Choices define the trajectory of your life

Every choice has a consequence and defines our future so be SMART when it comes to making decisions.

  1.  Forgiveness benefits you more that the person who has done your wrong

Living with anger and resentment weighs you down more than the other person since you are then one who is always thinking about it. I like something that Maya Angelou said, forgiveness doesn’t mean you have to invite someone back to your life, you have the right to protect yourself so forgive and let it go .

  1.  It’s okay to put yourself first

Have a sacred place inside yourself that nobody has the right to violate. Take care of yourself first so that you can be able to pass it on to others.

  1.  Live

Life is an adventure so do not be scared to try out new things. At the end of the day make sure that you have no regrets and have lived life to the fullest.

  1.  Learn

Purpose to practice KAIZEN. Continuously purpose to work on yourself.  Be a student for life.

  1.  Light

Constantly share what you have learnt with others and help other people in their growth journey.

First off I would like to say great blog! I had a quick question which I’d like to ask
if you don’t mind. I was curious to find out how you center yourself and clear your head
before writing. I have had difficulty clearing my mind in getting my
ideas out there. I truly do take pleasure in writing but it just seems like the first 10 to 15 minutes tend to be wasted just trying to figure out how to begin. Any suggestions or tips?
    Cheers!

Thanks? I have learnt that the hardest thing about writing is actually sitting down to write and not the content flowing. I normally write on Sunday afternoons so I guess it would start with setting specific relaxing times on when to write. Then before I even sit down to write I visualize myself doing it and how the piece will look and sound like which can be even days before, depending on when I get a download of what I should write about. I also mostly structure the first line in my head before sitting down to write. I guess what am trying to say even before bringing my idea to the world I’ve thought about and outlined it in my head and all that’s left is to put it down.
